Under Control
"Mr. Gustkin, are you grumpy again today?"
I was sitting by the fire with a blanket wrapped over my shoulders. The weather was not any better today, and I had slept poorly. It felt as if my cold was on the verge of returning. From the kitchen I could hear the sound of feminine laughter. Meanwhile, the little boy began scribbling again on a sheet of parchment with colored chalk when I did not answer him.
Anna had brought Deni over for what she called âWeekly Sunday Brunchâ, as if it was an official recurring event at the tavern. I had certainly not authorized such a thing.
Someone in the kitchen let out a short shriek of laughter, and it sounded like Charmâs voice, although I had a hard time believing my ears. And while I was getting an earful of the ladies in the kitchen chatting and laughing, my other ear was filled with Bunnies Bounding Through The Brush for thirty minutes straight.
"Look what I drew today," Deni said from the table. He held up the parchment. This piece of âartâ looked more like a living thing than the last time, but it had long mismatched ears, big terrifying claws, and a face that could only be described as pure horror. It was like some kind of monster from a bunny-induced nightmare. But at least this time it resembled an animal and not something that came out of an animal.
"Another bunny?" I said.
"A bunny?" Deni looked back at the drawing as if trying to see the bunny in the picture, but failing. He then gave me a look. "You have a strange imagination Master Arch. This is a monster."
My mouth dropped. This damn kid! He was playing with me, wasnât he?!
Deni looked back at the drawing again. "Ooo⦠now I see it. It does look like a bunny⦠but a scary bunny⦠a strong bunny⦠the Lord of Bunnies!"
"Why would the Lord of Bunnies be scary?" I said.
Deni gave me an unwavering grin, then he took off with his drawing into the kitchen, shouting, "Mommy! Look! I drew the Bunny Lord!"
That damn kid! He didnât even know what heâd drawn until I said so!
Deni came back out a few moments later. "It smells very good in there. Mommy, Miss Elsa, and Big Sister Charm all liked the Bunny Lord."
"Good for them," I said.
Deni climbed back onto his chair and began scribbling on a fresh sheet of parchment. But he kept looking at me from time to time.
"Good Celeru," I said. "Youâre not drawing me are you?"
"Um⦠no" Deni said with a guilty look.
A moment of silence passed between us, then he said, "Why is Mr. Gustkin grumpy?"
"Iâm not grumpy," I said.
"Mmmâ¦" Deni said. "Iâll tell Mommy to make some apple juice for you."
"What!? No! Donât do that!"
But it was too late.
When he said tell, I thought he meant he would go into the kitchen. Instead, this is what happened:
"MOMMY!" Deni shouted at the top of his lungs.
"What?" I heard Anna call back from the kitchen.
